Outdoor Accent Lighting Installation
At Astoria Lighting Co, we design and install professional outdoor lighting systems that transform your home’s appearance, safety, and value, from permanent holiday lights to landscape lighting and beyond
What is Outdoor Accent Lighting?
Outdoor accent lighting is decorative lighting designed to highlight, emphasize, or draw attention to specific features of your home and landscape. Unlike general illumination that simply makes areas visible, accent lighting creates visual interest by making certain elements stand out dramatically against their surroundings. Think of the difference between a room with the overhead lights on versus a room with carefully placed spotlights highlighting artwork. Accent lighting transforms your property into a nighttime showcase, emphasizing the features you are most proud of while creating depth, drama, and visual interest throughout your outdoor space.

Uplighting Techniques
Uplighting is the most dramatic accent lighting technique — fixtures at ground level aimed upward create an immediately eye-catching, almost theatrical presentation.
Best Applications
🌳 Trees — Reveals trunk texture and branch structure
🏛 Columns — Emphasizes vertical elements
🧱 Textured Walls — Highlights stone and brick
🏠 Chimneys — Creates towering focal points
Placement Matters
The key to effective uplighting is proper fixture placement and aiming — the difference between dramatic and overdone.
✕ Too close — creates harsh shadows
✕ Too far — diminishes the effect
✓ Just right — perfect drama & elegance
We rarely see things lit from below in nature — that’s why uplighting creates such a striking, memorable effect. We position every fixture to achieve the perfect balance for your specific features.
Wall Washing & Grazing
Two techniques for illuminating vertical surfaces — each creates a very different effect depending on your wall material and goals.
Wall Washing
Even & UniformFixtures placed far from the wall cast even, uniform light across the entire surface.
✓ Smooth stucco
✓ Painted surfaces
✓ General illumination
Grazing
Textured & BoldFixtures placed very close to the wall at a sharp angle emphasize every bump, ridge, and texture.
✓ Natural stone
✓ Brick facades
✓ Textured stucco
Choosing the right technique depends on your wall material and the effect you want. We assess your surfaces during a free consultation and recommend the approach that showcases them best.
Silhouette & Shadow Lighting
Beyond uplighting and wall washing, these techniques create unique, artistic effects that elevate your landscape design.
Silhouette Lighting
Light behind the object
Illuminates the background, leaving the object as a striking dark shape.
Perfect for interesting plant shapes or sculptures against a wall.
Shadow Lighting
Light in front of the object
Casts artistic shadow patterns onto a wall behind the object.
Beautiful with plants, trellises, or decorative elements.
Moonlighting
Light from above, in trees
Simulates natural moonlight filtering through branches for a dappled effect.
Subtle and romantic — ideal for dining areas or seating under trees.
The most stunning landscape designs layer multiple techniques — combining uplighting, silhouettes, shadows, and moonlighting for depth and artistry that transforms your property after dark.
Accent Lighting for Landscape Features
Your landscape features deserve the same attention as architecture. The key is choosing which features deserve emphasis rather than lighting everything equally.
Mature Trees
Often your most valuable asset — uplighting transforms them into dramatic nighttime focal points.
Specimen Plants & Grasses
Individual accent lights showcase ornamental plants and sculptures after dark.
Water Features
Come alive when illuminated from within or spotlit from outside — mesmerizing reflections.
Hardscape Elements
Retaining walls, boulders, and decorative stonework gain dimension when properly lit.
Garden Beds
Subtle accent lighting extends your garden’s visual impact into the evening hours.
Garden Sculptures
Individual accent lights turn statues and art pieces into captivating nighttime features.
Great accent lighting is about selective emphasis — not lighting everything equally, but choosing the features that create the most impact and letting the rest fade naturally into the background.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Are the lights replaceable?
Can the lights provide true warm white?
How do payments work?
How much electricity does it use?
Is it designed for extreme temperatures?
Yes! Each light and connection has an IP 68 Waterproof rating and can operate at -40° F to 130°+F. All connections and wires are UV rated and will be able to last if ever exposed to long periods of sunlight (which they will not be as they are installed under the roofline). The track is made out of aluminum which is durable and won’t rust or degrade–the same material your gutters are made from.
What is the warranty?
Astoria Lighting Co provides a Lifetime Warranty on all permanent holiday light bulbs included in your system. Additionally, we offer a 10-year “bumper-to-bumper” warranty on all installed parts, plus a 3-year service warranty on labor.
What is the cost per foot?
At Astoria Lighting Co, we install industry-leading permanent lighting systems designed for long-lasting performance and outstanding value. We offer brighter LED lights, true warm-white capabilities, a closed track system, individually addressable lights, and many other important features that our competitors do not offer. It is priced according to how much linear feet you want installed on your home, plus a Wi-Fi controller and power supply system, rather than on the square footage of the home, and the length of rooflines can vary dramatically for houses of similar size. Because of this, we have to measure your roofline in order to give you an accurate quote.
However, as a guide, we typically run in the $20 to $28 dollar per linear foot range—plus $250-450 for controllers and power supplies–depending on the time of the year, as we frequently offer pricing promotions during the Spring and Summer months to encourage our customers to get their systems installed outside of the busy fall holiday season. Most of our jobs fall into the $2500 to $5500 range—sold, installed, and warrantied, with all taxes and fees included—to put lighting where customers would typically hang their Christmas lights. We offer great payment options that allow you to spread out the cost over time, resulting in significant savings versus hanging traditional Christmas lights, installing pot or can lighting, or otherwise improving the look of your home.
Where are the lights installed?
Can I make my own accent lighting?
Can I save timers?
Where can the lights be controlled from?
With the app, you can control your lights anywhere using our cloud technology. This means as long as your handheld device has an internet connection, you can be at work or anywhere in the world and turn on and off or change patterns remotely!
Are the lights UL listed & CSA/ETL approved?
How long does the installation take?
Can I make my own patterns?
Can you see the lights from the street?
Are the lights dimmable?
Yes they are! Through the app, you can control and dim all the lights or just a section of the lights to get your desired effect.
How long does the system last?
Our LEDs are rated for 50,000 hours. It is a robust, outdoor rated LED lighting system that you can expect to last for years and years! We expect 10-20 years depending on usage–one installation, one investment, and many, many years with all of your lighting needs met!
