Outdoor Step and Stair Lighting Installation
From Hidden Hazards to Safe, Stunning Walkways: Expert Lighting for Every Step
Why Install Step and Stair Lighting?
Outdoor stairs are one of the most hazardous areas around any home after dark. Without proper lighting, even familiar steps become dangerous. Depth perception fails, edges blur together, and a simple misstep can result in serious injury. The statistics are sobering: falls are the leading cause of injury-related emergency room visits, and outdoor stairs are a primary culprit. Step lighting eliminates this danger by making each step edge clearly visible, allowing safe navigation even in complete darkness. Beyond safety, step lights add a sophisticated design element that elevates your home appearance and creates a welcoming path for guests arriving after sunset.
Safety Benefits of Stair Lights
Properly installed step lights make every tread visible by illuminating the edge where foot placement matters most.
Elderly Family Members
Reduced vision or mobility challenges make clearly lit step edges essential for safe navigation.
Young Children
Kids who run without looking benefit from clearly defined step edges that are impossible to miss.
Guests & Visitors
Unfamiliar with your stairs? Lit steps let anyone navigate safely on their very first visit.
No More Flashlights
Stop fumbling with your phone to navigate your own property after dark.
No Liability Worries
Host parties and gatherings without worrying about guests tripping on dark stairs.
Secure Entry
No dark approach to your entry that could hide potential intruders.
Many homeowners install step lights after a near-miss or minor fall reveals just how dangerous their unlit stairs had become. Don’t wait for that moment — protect your family now.
Types of Outdoor Step Lights
Step lighting comes in several styles to match different applications and aesthetics. All use LED technology for durability, efficiency, and long life.
Riser Lights
Vertical MountInstall on the front face of each step, casting light downward onto the tread below. The most effective approach for most stairs.
Tread Lights
Surface MountMount on the step surface near the front edge, illuminating the step itself and the one below for clear visibility.
Recessed Wall Lights
Flush InstallInstall into adjacent walls or posts, washing light across steps from the side for a clean, architectural look.
Surface-Mount Fixtures
Easy RetrofitAttach to walls or railings when recessing isn’t possible — a practical solution for existing structures.

Deck & Patio Stair Solutions
Deck and patio stairs present unique opportunities for step lighting. We design solutions that preserve your deck while providing excellent illumination.
Wood Deck Steps
Riser-mounted lights attach to the vertical face without penetrating the tread — preserving your boards.
Composite Decking
Built-in channels designed for integrated lighting make installation even cleaner and seamless.
Multi-Level Decks
Cohesive lighting across multiple stair runs for safe passage throughout your outdoor space.
Rail Post Cap Lights
Built-in post cap lights complement step lighting for a complete deck illumination system.
We create a cohesive lighting design that ties all areas of your deck together — steps, rails, and living areas — for a complete outdoor experience.
Hardscape Stair Lighting
Masonry stairs require different installation approaches than wood decks. The result? A flush, seamless appearance that looks like the lighting was always part of the design.
Recessed in Mortar or Stone
Cut into mortar joints, stone treads, or adjacent walls for a completely flush, integrated look.
Surface-Mount
When cutting into hardscape isn’t desired or feasible — a practical alternative with clean results.
Retaining Wall Integration
Lights integrated into wall caps or faces at each step level for stairs built into retaining walls.
The key is choosing fixtures rated for ground contact — designed to withstand moisture, freeze-thaw cycles, and foot traffic. We have experience with all hardscape materials and will recommend the best approach for your situation.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Are the lights replaceable?
Can the lights provide true warm white?
How do payments work?
How much electricity does it use?
Is it designed for extreme temperatures?
Yes! Each light and connection has an IP 68 Waterproof rating and can operate at -40° F to 130°+F. All connections and wires are UV rated and will be able to last if ever exposed to long periods of sunlight (which they will not be as they are installed under the roofline). The track is made out of aluminum which is durable and won’t rust or degrade–the same material your gutters are made from.
What is the warranty?
Astoria Lighting Co provides a Lifetime Warranty on all permanent holiday light bulbs included in your system. Additionally, we offer a 10-year “bumper-to-bumper” warranty on all installed parts, plus a 3-year service warranty on labor.
What is the cost per foot?
At Astoria Lighting Co, we install industry-leading permanent lighting systems designed for long-lasting performance and outstanding value. We offer brighter LED lights, true warm-white capabilities, a closed track system, individually addressable lights, and many other important features that our competitors do not offer. It is priced according to how much linear feet you want installed on your home, plus a Wi-Fi controller and power supply system, rather than on the square footage of the home, and the length of rooflines can vary dramatically for houses of similar size. Because of this, we have to measure your roofline in order to give you an accurate quote.
However, as a guide, we typically run in the $20 to $28 dollar per linear foot range—plus $250-450 for controllers and power supplies–depending on the time of the year, as we frequently offer pricing promotions during the Spring and Summer months to encourage our customers to get their systems installed outside of the busy fall holiday season. Most of our jobs fall into the $2500 to $5500 range—sold, installed, and warrantied, with all taxes and fees included—to put lighting where customers would typically hang their Christmas lights. We offer great payment options that allow you to spread out the cost over time, resulting in significant savings versus hanging traditional Christmas lights, installing pot or can lighting, or otherwise improving the look of your home.
