Outdoor Living

Extend Your Outdoor Living After Dark

Your deck represents a significant investment in outdoor living space, but without lighting, you can only enjoy it during daylight hours. Deck lighting doubles the usable hours of your favorite outdoor space.

Imagine hosting dinner parties under the stars, enjoying a glass of wine as the sun sets, or simply reading outdoors on a warm summer evening. Deck lighting makes all of this possible.

Double Your Hours

Transform your deck from a daytime-only space into an evening destination for relaxation, dining, and entertaining.

Safety First

Illuminate steps, railings, and potential obstacles so every evening on your deck is safe and worry-free.

Entertain Outdoors

Host dinner parties under the stars, enjoy evening drinks, or read outdoors on warm summer nights.

If you have a deck you love during the day, lighting lets you love it twice as long. Proper deck lighting transforms your outdoor investment into a space you can enjoy from morning coffee to midnight conversations.

Fixture Guide

Types of Deck Lighting

Deck lighting includes several fixture types designed for different purposes. Most effective designs combine several types for a layered, functional result.

Post Cap Lights

Mount on top of deck posts, providing ambient illumination and decorative interest at railing height.

Rail Lights

Mount on or under railings to illuminate the deck surface with functional, even light distribution.

Stair Lights

Built into step risers to ensure safe navigation between levels, preventing trips and falls after dark.

Recessed Deck Lights

Install flush with the deck surface, providing subtle illumination without any protruding fixtures.

Under-Rail Lighting

Casts a soft glow downward from beneath the railing caps, creating an elegant, hidden light source.

String Lights

Hung overhead to create a festive, inviting atmosphere perfect for entertaining and outdoor dining.

The most effective deck lighting combines several fixture types for a layered, functional design. We’ll help you choose the right mix based on your deck layout, how you use the space, and the ambiance you want to create.

Railing Solutions

Deck Rail and Post Lighting

Rail and post lighting illuminates at railing height, creating ambient light that defines the deck perimeter while providing functional illumination.

Post Cap Lights

Available in countless styles from traditional lanterns to sleek modern designs. They replace or cover existing post tops and provide 360-degree illumination.

  Traditional lantern styles
  Sleek modern designs
  360° ambient illumination
  Fits existing post tops

Rail Lights

Mount directly to the top rail or underneath it, casting light down onto the deck surface for functional, even coverage.

  Top-mount or under-mount
  Downward deck illumination
  Low-profile designs
  Multiple finish options

Under-Rail Strip Lighting

Creates a continuous glow along the entire railing length for a seamless, modern look that softly illuminates the deck perimeter.

Important

When planning rail lighting, consider your railing material and style to ensure compatibility. We help you select fixtures that complement your deck aesthetic while providing appropriate light levels.

Safety Essential

Deck Stair Lighting

Deck stairs are the most critical area for lighting because they present the greatest safety risk after dark. Without illumination, it’s easy to misjudge step depth, miss a riser, or stumble on transitions.

Unlit stairs are the #1 cause of outdoor falls at night. Proper stair lighting isn’t just an upgrade — it’s essential safety.

Stair Lighting Options
Most Effective

Riser Lights

Mount on the vertical face of each step, illuminating the tread below for maximum visibility and safety.

  Low-profile design

  Best safety coverage

Post Lights

Placed at the top and bottom of stair runs, providing additional visibility and marking transitions clearly.

  Additional ambient light

  Pairs with riser lights

Tread-Mounted

A practical alternative when riser mounting isn’t feasible, installed flush into the step tread surface.

  Flush-mount design

  Works on any stair type

  Good riser alternative

We always include stair lighting in comprehensive deck lighting plans because safe passage is essential. Every step should be clearly visible from approach to landing.

Design Guide

Deck Lighting Design Considerations

Effective deck lighting balances ambient illumination with task lighting and accent features. Here’s how to plan a layered design that works for your lifestyle.

The Three Layers
1

Safety & Ambient

Start with the essentials: stair lighting for safety and enough ambient light to navigate the deck comfortably.

  Stair & step lighting
  Post cap lights
  Rail illumination

2

Task Lighting

Add focused lighting in areas where you need to see clearly, like outdoor kitchens, grilling stations, or dining tables.

  Outdoor kitchen areas
  Dining table zones
  Grill & prep stations

3

Accent Features

Highlight architectural features, planters, or nearby landscape elements to add depth and visual interest.

  Architectural highlights
  Landscape features
  Decorative elements

Zone Your Deck

Entertaining Zones

Brighter, more festive lighting — string lights, layered fixtures, and task lighting for dining and socializing.

Relaxation Zones

Softer, more subtle illumination — under-rail glow, low post caps, and dimmable fixtures for quiet evenings.

Pro Tip

Dimmers let you adjust light levels for different occasions — bright for entertaining, soft for relaxing, and everything in between.

We create deck lighting plans tailored to your specific deck and lifestyle — balancing safety, function, and ambiance into one cohesive design.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Yes. Each light is an individual unit and attaches to the other lights via weatherproof, threaded caps, so they are easily unscrewed, pulled out, and replaced.
Yes, as low as 2700K. It is true that other products on the market in the Permanent Christmas Lighting space do not offer a true warm white. The LED must be RGB-WW and have a yellow “diode” to allow for true warm white–which ours do!
We collect 25% down and then order your materials. The balance is due at installation by check, cash, card, or through our 3rd party financing partner. We make it as easy as possible for your budget!
The lights on full bright white use less than one watt of power. It’s little enough that you won’t notice a difference in your electricity usage.

Yes! Each light and connection has an IP 68 Waterproof rating and can operate at -40° F to 130°+F. All connections and wires are UV rated and will be able to last if ever exposed to long periods of sunlight (which they will not be as they are installed under the roofline). The track is made out of aluminum which is durable and won’t rust or degrade–the same material your gutters are made from.

Astoria Lighting Co provides a Lifetime Warranty on all permanent holiday light bulbs included in your system. Additionally, we offer a 10-year “bumper-to-bumper” warranty on all installed parts, plus a 3-year service warranty on labor.

At Astoria Lighting Co., we install industry-leading permanent lighting systems designed for long-lasting performance and outstanding value. We offer brighter LED lights, true warm-white capabilities, a closed track system, individually addressable lights, and many other important features that our competitors do not offer. It is priced according to how much linear feet you want installed on your home, plus a Wi-Fi controller and power supply system, rather than on the square footage of the home, and the length of rooflines can vary dramatically for houses of similar size. Because of this, we have to measure your roofline in order to give you an accurate quote.

However, as a guide, we typically run in the $20 to $28 dollar per linear foot range—plus $250-450 for controllers and power supplies–depending on the time of the year, as we frequently offer pricing promotions during the Spring and Summer months to encourage our customers to get their systems installed outside of the busy fall holiday season. Most of our jobs fall into the $2500 to $5500 range—sold, installed, and warrantied, with all taxes and fees included—to put lighting where customers would typically hang their Christmas lights. We offer great payment options that allow you to spread out the cost over time, resulting in significant savings versus hanging traditional Christmas lights, installing pot or can lighting, or otherwise improving the look of your home.

The lights are installed to the outer part of the soffit behind the fascia or trim, facing downward.
Yes! Each light is individually addressable, meaning you can choose which lights you want on and what color you want them to be (anything from bright white to warm white or any color in the spectrum). For example, you can turn on lights at the top of each peak and over corners and columns, while the rest of the lights stay off, to provide nightly accents for your home. Our competitors do not offer this customizability.
Yes, you can save multiple nightly & weekly timers as well as calendar events for holidays and other special occasions. You can have them set by hour, or use the Sunrise and Sunset features.

With the app, you can control your lights anywhere using our cloud technology. This means as long as your handheld device has an internet connection, you can be at work or anywhere in the world and turn on and off or change patterns remotely!

Yes! The lights are ETL certified in the USA and Canada. Most low-voltage lighting companies are under the impression that they do not need proper CSA approvals for lighting if it is low voltage. This is incorrect and as a consumer, you should make sure that the product you are purchasing is indeed approved. You will see our ETL stamp of approval on our products.
Average-sized installations are done in one day. You only need to be there for the beginning and the end of the installation. We will coordinate with you when we schedule your installation.
Yes! The lights are individually addressable which allows you to choose which lights you want on and what color you want them to be, and join them together in different patterns and animations. There are millions of different colors that you can make! We also have hundreds of preset patterns and animations.
We install the lights in a color-matched aluminum track, made out of the same material that your gutters are made from. We depth-match the track to the way your soffit is built, so that the lights slightly protrude from the track below the fascia. They are unnoticeable from the street unless you are looking for them.

Yes they are! Through the app, you can control and dim all the lights or just a section of the lights to get your desired effect.

Our LEDs are rated for 50,000 hours. It is a robust, outdoor rated LED lighting system that you can expect to last for years and years! We expect 10-20 years depending on usage–one installation, one investment, and many, many years with all of your lighting needs met!

Using the depth of the fascia on your home, we will hang it based on that specific depth. This allows us to create a low profile look that blends nicely into your home.
