How We Design

Our Design Approach: Layered Light

Anyone can point a light at a wall. Landscape lighting design is deciding what to light, what to leave dark, and how the layers add up from the street, the driveway, and the kitchen window.

Uplighting

Fixtures at the base of trees, columns, and stonework, aimed up. The signature look of professional landscape lighting, and the fastest way to give a property depth at night.

Moonlighting

Fixtures mounted high in mature trees, aimed down through the branches. It casts soft, dappled light across lawns and patios that reads as natural. If you have big oaks or hardwoods, this is the technique worth the whole project.

Grazing

Light placed close to a textured surface, stone, brick, board-and-batten, raking across it to pull out the relief. Made for Hill Country limestone.

Silhouetting and Shadowing

Backlighting a specimen plant against a wall, or throwing its shadow onto one. Drama, used sparingly.

Path and Area Light

Downward, shielded light for walking surfaces. The rule is light on the ground, never in the eyes.

Wash Lighting

Low, even light across garden beds and low walls that ties the brighter moments together.

A design decides brightness relationships too. The front door should read brightest, the architecture second, plantings third. When everything is equally bright, nothing looks designed. That hierarchy is what a landscape lighting designer actually delivers, and it is why we design at your property, at night when possible, not from a satellite photo.

Pathway and Walkway Lighting

Walkway lighting is where guests form their first impression, and where spacing discipline shows. We place path lights 4 to 6 feet apart, staggered along the walk rather than lined up like a runway, with shielded heads that put light on the ground and not in your eyes. Fixture style ranges from low-profile hats that vanish into the planting to statement pieces that carry the look in daylight too. Beyond the front walk: garden paths, side yards, and the route from driveway to door, the trip people actually walk in the dark with their hands full.

What We Light

One design, every surface you use after dark. Each area below is part of the same layered plan, not a separate project.

Tree and Garden Lighting

Trees are the biggest things on your property and the most underused after dark. Uplighting a live oak turns it into architecture; moonlighting from inside its canopy lights the whole area beneath it with light that looks like it belongs. Garden lighting works the same layered way: wash light across beds, small accents on specimen plants, and restraint everywhere else so the garden reads as depth, not dots. Seasonal plantings change; we design around the bones, the trees, beds, and hardscape that stay.

Pathway and Walkway Lighting

Deck and Patio Lighting

Deck lighting has to survive feet, furniture, and weather, so it is built from different parts: lights on stairs, post cap lights on railings, under-rail strips for a floating glow, and downlights from pergolas or eaves for dining areas. The goal on a patio is restaurant light, enough to see dinner and faces, dim enough that the yard beyond still exists. Zoned brightness matters most here, and every deck system we install gets it.

Step and Stair Lighting

Steps are the one place lighting is a safety system first. Depth perception fails in the dark, and a single unlit grade change is how ankles get broken at parties. We light every riser or every edge, in the stair face or under the tread lip, shielded so the light lands on the step and not in the climber’s eyes. It is a small line item on a design and the one we refuse to cut.

Driveway Lighting

Driveway lighting marks the route without turning it into a landing strip: low markers at the entrance and along curves, pillar or column lights at the entry if the property has them, and grazing on gate stonework. For long or rural drives, entrance lighting does the navigation work and the house lighting does the welcome.

Fence and Perimeter Lighting

Post cap lights, under-rail runs, and wash light along fence lines define the edge of the property at night and close the dark gaps a security camera cannot see into. On modern horizontal fences, a continuous low-level run reads as a designed feature, not an add-on. Perimeter light is also the quiet half of a security design: consistent, unremarkable, always on when you want it.

Pool Area Lighting

We light everything around the pool: the deck surfaces, seating and dining zones, planting beds, and the safety route from house to water, with fixtures rated for wet environments and placed so nothing glares across the water into anyone’s eyes. In-pool fixtures themselves are pool-contractor territory; everything from the decking out is ours, and it is the part you see all year, not just swim season.

The System

Low Voltage LED: Why It Runs Everything We Install

Every system we design runs on low voltage LED, and it is worth one plain-language minute to explain why that phrase matters.

Low Voltage

A transformer steps household 120V power down to 12 to 15 volts before it goes anywhere near your yard. That makes the buried wiring safe around kids, pets, shovels, and rain, keeps installation clean, and lets us run long circuits of fixtures from a single professionally sized transformer with room to expand later.

LED

Each fixture draws a few watts instead of the 20 to 50 that old halogen systems burned per bulb. A full property design typically adds a few dollars a month to an electric bill, up to 90 percent less than the halogen systems it replaces, with lamps that last for years instead of seasons. If you have an aging halogen system now, replacing it with LED is often the highest-value project on this page.

The honest word on solar: we do not install solar landscape lights. Panel-and-battery path lights dim through the evening, die young, and cannot deliver designed brightness levels. Wired low voltage costs more on day one and is the reason professionally lit homes look the way they do on day 3,000.

Materials

Fixtures Built for Decades

The fixture is the part of a landscape lighting system you live with, in daylight too, so we are particular. We work mainly in brass, black, and aluminum fixtures, from AMP, Dauer, and our own Astoria line, chosen for how they age: finishes that hold their look, and glare shields and mounting hardware that survive the string trimmer. Those are our main products and main suppliers, not a limit. If your design calls for something specific we can source it. What we will not install is the contractor-grade gear sold in big-box multipacks, because we warranty our work and cheap housings make that promise impossible to keep.

We walk the property with you, and talk about how you use the space: where you sit, what you see from inside, what feels dark. We demo key fixtures in place after dark so you can see the design before you buy it.

Design and Fixed Quote

A fixture-by-fixture plan with brightness hierarchy, zones, and a fixed price.

Installation

Wiring is hand trenched, no machines tearing the lawn. Cuts heal in one to two weeks, and any landscaping we disturb we repair at no cost. Every installer we send is fully vetted and trained in Astoria’s proven installation methods. Most residential installations start within 2 to 2.5 weeks of design approval and finish in one to two days.

After-Dark Aiming

The visit that separates designed lighting from installed lighting: we aim every fixture, set zones and scenes, and adjust brightness relationships in place.

Warranty. Fixture warranties vary by manufacturer and product, and we state the terms for the exact fixtures in your design on the quote. Our own workmanship warranty is one year, and landscape lighting carries a one-year service warranty on labor.

Every design is fixture-count specific, so landscape lighting is quoted, not priced from a chart. As honest orientation: small front-elevation designs start around $2,500, typical whole-property designs with 15 to 30 fixtures run $3,500 to $10,000, and estates with mature trees and extensive hardscape go up from there.

Works With Your Roofline Lighting

If you have, or are considering, our permanent Christmas lights, landscape lighting is the ground layer of the same nighttime design: roofline tracing the architecture up top, warm accents in the trees and beds below. Designed together they share brightness hierarchy and scheduling, and the result reads as one intentional system rather than two purchases. In many cases, yes. We can extend or upgrade an existing low voltage system where the bones are worth building on, including halogen-to-LED retrofits. If the old system is not worth extending we will say so plainly and quote a redesign alongside it so you can compare honestly.

Do you install solar landscape lights?

No, and it is a considered no: solar path lights cannot hold designed brightness through the night or the years. We install wired low voltage LED because it still looks right a decade in.

How many fixtures does a typical home need?

Front elevations usually land between 8 and 15 fixtures; full properties with trees, paths, and outdoor living areas commonly run 15 to 30. The design determines the number, never the reverse, and we will show you what each tier buys before you decide.

Do landscape lights stay on all night?

Your call, per zone. Most customers run everything from dusk until bedtime, then keep entry and security zones on until dawn. Schedules handle it automatically, including seasonal sunset shifts.

Can we install landscape lighting in phases?

Yes, and we design for it: the transformer is sized with headroom, and wiring runs anticipate the next phase. Front elevation this year, backyard next year, no redoing anything.

Is landscape lighting safe around kids, pets, and sprinklers?

Yes. Low voltage systems carry 12 to 15 volts, safe to touch, and every fixture and connection we install is wet-location rated. It is the same reason we can bury the wiring shallow and route it through planting beds.
