The Idea

What Accent Lighting Does

Lighting designers have known it forever: general light makes a room visible, accent light makes it beautiful. The same is true outside. Accent lighting is selective, it chooses the features worth seeing at night, brick coursing, limestone texture, gables, columns, deep eaves, a front door worth arriving at, and puts controlled light exactly there.

The result is depth. A house with only a porch light is a flat shape at the curb; a house with designed accent lighting has foreground, texture, and shadow, and it looks composed from every angle including the kitchen window looking out. It is also the most durable kind of curb appeal there is: paint fades in a decade, plantings change every season, and light looks exactly this good every single night.

The Signature Move

Uplighting for Your House

Uplighting is the signature move of residential accent lighting: fixtures at ground level, aimed up the face of the house, turning columns, corners, and chimneys into architecture. If you have admired a home at night and could not say why it looked expensive, this was probably why. What good uplighting for a house gets right:

Position

Fixtures sit 12 to 18 inches off the wall for a tight dramatic graze on texture, or 3 to 5 feet out for a softer, fuller wash on smooth surfaces. Corners and columns get their own fixtures; the eye reads verticals first.

What to Light

Structural rhythm: columns, the spaces between windows, chimney masses, gables, and entry surrounds. Not the windows themselves, bedrooms do not enjoy uplights, and not every square foot. Selection is the design.

Beam and Brightness

Narrow beams for columns, wide floods for wall planes, and brightness matched to the surface: pale limestone needs half the output dark brick does.

Concealment

In-grade well lights where fixtures must vanish, shielded bullets tucked into planting beds elsewhere. Daylight should show you a clean facade, not a row of hardware.

The Techniques

Where uplighting is the headline, a complete accent design draws from the full kit. On this page, applied to the building itself; for trees, gardens, and the rest of the yard, the same craft lives on our landscape lighting page.

Wall Washing

Even, soft light across a broad facade from fixtures set well off the wall. It flatters smooth surfaces, stucco, painted brick, siding, and makes small houses read larger at night.

Grazing

Fixtures tight to the wall, raking light across texture: stone, brick, board-and-batten. Central Texas limestone was born for this; the relief comes alive and the wall becomes the artwork.

Silhouetting

Light the wall behind an object, an ornamental tree against the facade, a sculpture, a striking railing, and let the shape read as a dark profile. Sparingly, memorably.

Shadowing

The reverse: light the object from the front and let its shadow play on the wall behind. A live oak’s branches moving across a lit gable is the kind of detail guests mention.

Downlighting

From eaves and soffits, controlled pools of light on entries, walls, and hardscape. Clean, architectural, glare-free; and where a soffit run makes sense, it connects naturally to our soffit lighting installations.

The craft is restraint and hierarchy: the entry brightest, architecture second, everything else supporting. When every surface is lit equally, nothing is designed.

Double Duty

Accent Lighting From Your Roofline

Here is the accent trick most homeowners have not considered: if your home has, or gets, our permanent Christmas lights, you already own a whole additional accent system. Every light in the roofline track is individually controllable, so on ordinary nights you can run true warm white on just the peaks, the corners, and the entry line, subtle, elegant, and indistinguishable from purpose-built architectural lighting, with the rest of the run dark. Ground-level uplighting draws the eye up; roofline accents finish the top of the composition; together they frame the entire elevation. It is permanent exterior house lighting doing double duty, and designing the two layers as one system is something an independent provider who installs both, which is us, does better than anyone selling either one alone.

Good security lighting and good accent lighting are the same project done thoughtfully. What deters is not one blinding motion flood by the garage; it is a home with no dark approaches, lit consistently and calmly every night. When we design outdoor security lighting, we:

Side yards, rear corners, fence lines, and the approaches a camera cannot see into, then close them with even, comfortable light levels.

What We Install

Fixtures and Placement

The fixtures we install are chosen to disappear: in-grade well lights, low-profile shielded bullets, floods, and hardscape lights that tuck into steps and walls, in brass, black, and aluminum finishes. AMP, Dauer, and our own Astoria line are our main suppliers, and we can source something specific when a design calls for it. Color temperature is a design decision we make with you, anywhere from 2700K warm for traditional homes and stone up to 6000K where the design calls for it, kept consistent across every fixture because mixed whites are the fastest way to make a lighting design look accidental. Everything runs low voltage LED, a few dollars a month to operate, with wiring hand trenched and hidden.

Free Consultation

We walk the property, find the best angles, and listen for how you use the front of your home and what you see from inside.

Design and Fixed Quote

Fixture-by-fixture, technique-by-technique, with the brightness hierarchy planned and a fixed price attached.

Installation

Our own crews, hand-trenched wiring, concealed fixtures, typically one to two days. Every installer we send is fully vetted and trained in Astoria’s proven installation methods.

After-Dark Tuning Where the Design Calls for It

On designs where aiming needs to be judged in the dark, we return at night and tune the beams in place: angles, brightness, shielding, until the house looks the way the design promised.

Warranty. Accent designs use either our permanent track-and-light products or landscape lighting products, so the warranty follows the products in your design and we state the exact terms on the quote. Where the design uses landscape products, our workmanship warranty is one year with a one-year service warranty on labour.

What Accent Lighting Costs

Accent designs are quoted by fixture count and technique. As orientation, a front-elevation uplighting design typically runs $2,000 to $4,000. Larger designs are priced off whichever system they use, so the ranges match our permanent lighting or landscape lighting pricing depending on what your house calls for.

Accent lighting is also the natural phase-one project: light the front elevation now, and the system extends to the full property later without redoing anything. Quotes are fixed after the design visit.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will uplighting bother my neighbors or shine in windows?

Not if designed properly. Beams are chosen and aimed at surfaces, and fixtures are shielded. Glare is a design failure, and we do not ship design failures.

What color temperature should house lighting be?

Warm, 2700K, for most homes, especially stone and traditional architecture, and cooler where the architecture calls for it, up to 6000K. One temperature everywhere, always.

Is accent lighting enough for security?

A well-designed accent plan removes most dark zones by nature, and our security layer closes the rest. The combination outperforms any single floodlight, and looks nothing like one.

Can you add accent lighting to my existing landscape lighting system?

We can add our system as a complement to an existing system in many cases. We do not tie into high voltage systems, and we do not tie into outdated systems where doing so could void your warranty. We will assess what you have and tell you plainly whether it is worth building on.

How is this different from your landscape lighting?

Same craft, different canvas. This page is the building: uplighting, washing, grazing the architecture. Landscape lighting is the yard: paths, trees, gardens, decks. Most full designs include both, composed together.

Do the roofline lights really work as accent lighting?

Yes, and it is many customers’ favorite feature: warm white on just the peaks and corners, controlled per light. See permanent Christmas lights for the system itself.

How many uplights does the front of a house need?

Count the verticals: corners, columns, chimney, and the features between windows. Typical front elevations land between 6 and 12 fixtures. More is rarely better; rhythm and restraint are what make it look designed.

What is the difference between uplighting and flood lighting?

Intent and control. A flood throws wide, flat light for visibility; an uplight places a shaped beam on a specific surface for effect. Same electricity, completely different result, and most disappointing DIY jobs are floods doing an uplight’s job.

Will constant lighting fade paint, brick, or stone?

No. LED fixtures emit negligible UV and almost no heat, which are the two things that fade and stress materials. Sunlight does more to your paint in a July afternoon than our fixtures will in a decade.

Should accent lighting stay on all night?

Most homes run the full design from dusk to bedtime, then step down to an overnight scene, entry and security zones on, decorative zones off or dimmed. It reads considerate to the street and keeps the overnight lighting purposeful.
